The cosmetic form of botulinum toxin, often referred to by its product name BOTOX®, is a popular non-surgical injection that temporarily reduces or eliminates frown lines, forehead creases, crows feet near the eyes and thick bands in the neck.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium, which reduces the activity of the muscles that cause those frown lines between the brows to form over time. The toxin blocks the nerve impulses, temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles while giving the skin a smoother, more refreshed appearance. Because Botox is injected directly into the muscle itself, the risk of migration of the injected medication is very low.
Studies have also suggested that BOTOX® is effective in relieving migraine headaches, excessive sweating (Hyperhidrosis) and muscle spasms in the neck and eyes.
Since the effects of BOTOX® are temporary, repeated treatments at four to six month intervals are recommended. This will help you to obtain optimal results in preventing the formation of fine lines caused by your facial muscles.
When is BOTOX® Cosmetic contraindicated?
DO NOT use BOTOX® if:
- You have an infection where BOTOX® Cosmetic will be injected
- Are allergic to any of the ingredients in BOTOX® Cosmetic
- Are pregnant or think you might be pregnant.
What should I tell Dr. Brenner before using BOTOX® Cosmetic?
- If you have any diseases that affect your nerves and muscles. These diseases may increase your chance of side effects with BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment.
- If you are breastfeeding
- If you are planning to become pregnant soon.
Can any of my medicines interact with BOTOX® Cosmetic?
Be sure that Dr. Brenner knows the names of all the medicines you are using, including:
- Antibiotics used to treat infections, such as gentamicin, tobramycin, clindamycin, and lincomycin
- Medicines used to treat heart rhythm problems, such as quinidine
- Medicines used to treat different conditions, such as myasthenia gravis or Alzheimer’s disease
As with all prescription medicines, you should also notify your doctor if you are taking any over-the-counter medicines, blood thinners or herbal products.
Soft Tissue Fillers
Soft tissue fillers are flexible substances that can be injected into the skin to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, plump lips, fill hollow cheeks, repair various facial imperfections, improve scars, and elevate deep folds. Plastic Surgeons use a variety of soft tissue fillers, including human and bovine (cattle) collagen, hyaluronic acid (Restylane®), autologous fat (one’s own fat), and donor tissue. The growing number of available fillers has greatly expanded the anti-aging and skin-saving treatments that plastic surgeons offer. Since filler substances do not involve major surgery and are generally cost-effective, men and women are using these youth-enhancing techniques more than ever.
What can soft tissue fillers do?
The aging process generally causes a loss of volume as the underlying collagen, hyaluronic acid, and elastin fibers begin to deteriorate and fat stores in the face decrease. This most commonly occurs around the eyes, mouth, cheeks, jaw line, brow, and bridge of the nose, producing crow’s feet, laugh lines, folds and furrows on the forehead, and “hills and valleys” on the lower third of the face. Soft tissue fillers have the unique ability to fill and contour these changes.
Fillers can be placed into the lips to create a fuller, more youthful look, or in the hollows of the cheeks to reduce a gaunt appearance. Facial scarring from acne or injury also responds well to soft tissue filler techniques. How do soft tissue fillers work?
A filler substance is injected beneath the surface of the skin where it corrects the line or wrinkle by temporarily plumping and smoothing out the skin depression. Most fillers replace the host components of the skin: collagen, hyaluronic acid, and elastin. Some fillers also can stimulate production of collagen.
