For excessively large breasts that do not atrophy (get smaller) after childbirth, a breast reduction operation may be helpful. This operation is very similar to a breast lift (mastopexy), except that breast tissue is excised. Candidates for breast reduction frequently complain of back pain, bra strap grooving, and refractory rashes under the breasts. This procedure is frequently a covered benefit of health insurance plans.
The breast reduction operation is fairly straight-forward and is usually performed as an outpatient procedure. Most patients are able to recover at home after this three to four hour procedure.
